Ways to use The Framework

The framework has been designed primarily for use by money guidance practitioners for their own self-development. However, it will also be useful for team managers, service providers and anyone who commissions money guidance services.

The framework forms part of a wider programme of support that we plan to offer the money guidance community. This may include, for example, a digital learning and assessment platform, training and development opportunities and quality improvement networks.

The programme will include tools and resources for using the framework. However, to get the ball rolling we’ve created a ‘starter for 10’ below; giving you practical ideas ranging from quick self-assessment tasks to longer discussion activities.

We’re interested in hearing from anyone who uses the framework or would like to be kept informed about our future plans. We intend to review the framework and use it in 12 to 18 months’ time. Your feedback will be an important element of that review, helping to shape the wider programme.

Here’s how you can get started with the framework and use it to move forward:

Money guidance practitioners – for self-development and career planning:

Familiarise yourself with the behaviours and personal characteristics that form the foundation of the framework:

  • How do they fit with the demands of your role?
  • In which areas do you feel most able?
  • Where do you lack confidence?
  • Which aspects would you prioritise as part of a personal development plan?
  • Map your role onto the framework’s 12 technical domains:
  • Does it cover the breadth of money guidance for the people you help?
  • Are you clear where your role meets any regulated boundaries? for example, debt advice
  • What tiers – levels of complexity – are you working at?
  • In which areas would you welcome further technical training?
  • How do the technical domains fit with your career plans? For example, to become more specialist

Money guidance practitioners – in teams or groups:

Discuss the framework with other practitioners – people you work with or in other organisations:

  • Which technical domains do you have in common?
  • Where do your roles differ?
  • Do you share the same levels of confidence and expertise?
  • Can you agree what constitutes ‘good practice’ by sharing customer experiences and other work-based examples?

Team leaders – for service design and delivery

Familiarise yourself with the scope of the framework:

  • How does its breadth and depth relate to what your service offers?
  • Are you clear which money guidance roles within your service meet any regulated boundaries? for example. Debt advice
  • How does it compare to training offered to you and your team?
  • Compare the framework with other people management tools:
  • How does it relate to job descriptions and interview questions?
  • Where do the technical domains and tiers feature in learning and development plans?
  • How does performance management address the foundation competency behaviours and personal characteristics?
